EASTER BONNETS
Back when the children were small, Easter Bonnets were my thing - I'll readily admit I wasn't an especially crafty mum for 11 months of the year but as soon as those mini-eggs and plastic chicks appeared in the shops, I'd go all "Blue Peter" on it! The hours of fun I'd have with the kids making the hats were so special. We bonded over those little fluffy sheep and lollypop sticks, deciding how much was too much, oh and and we always, always had a theme!!
One year it was Shaun the Sheep, another was Peter Rabbit. Minions was a good one, and even Olaf from Frozen made an appearance. There'd be lots and lots of mess - glue, feathers and fluffy chicks covered the dining table. But it didn't matter because it was "Easter", and (most important of all) we wanted to enter our creations into the school's big event - The Easter Bonnet Parade!
The morning of the main of event would come around so quickly, and off we'd trapse to school, with our creations "safely" encased in a supermarket carrier bag. We always lost the odd twig or polystyrene egg on the journey; so out would come the emergency glue gun at the school-gate ready to put it all right before the kids dashed into school to prepare themselves for the big show; and the parents would take their seats in the hall with camera-phones at the ready.
The joy and hilarity that followed was actually priceless. The kids would file into the school hall with the bonnets (mostly) balanced on their little heads. The parents and teachers would look on in wonder and awe at all of the creations; proud grandparents jostling with each other to get the best photos - we used to give New York Fashion Week a run for it's money!
Winning didn't really matter (well only a teeny bit!). The most important part of it for me was the memories we made along the way; and now my children are in senior school so we've said goodbye to the Easter bonnets, so thankfully I am left with the very happy memories.
